A waterworks that gives back to the city
Glostrup Vandværk
PLH are architects behind the new waterworks that will give softer water to Glostrup.
Glostrup Waterworks brings process plant, operations and staff facilities together in one building and will supply softer water to residents and businesses in Glostrup. PLH is behind the architecture and has designed a waterworks that is not hidden away but opens up to the neighborhood. The building is divided into three volumes, each shaped by the process plant inside, which keeps both the footprint and the built volume to a minimum. Charred timber façades with vertical and horizontal bands form a light façade on a heavy concrete base, drawing on the tradition of larger technical facilities. Round windows in the base and large glazed corners give passers-by a view into the filter hall and the clean water tanks. Inside, the layout follows the water's path through the plant, guiding visitors naturally through the process and showing how drinking water is produced. At the same time, the building is planned for a good working environment and efficient operation, and an installation opening to the south makes it possible to expand the plant and replace even the largest filter tanks.
Solar panels cover 60% of the roof, and the structure of proven precast concrete elements ensures a long lifespan and low maintenance costs. Thanks to the smaller footprint, there is room for more greenery, with a woodland path around the waterworks, standard oak trees and native planting. The result is a waterworks where the inner qualities match the outer ones, contributing both to the city's water supply and to life in the neighborhood.
Maria Tranebæk Lindstrøm, architect and Project Leader, PLHGlostrup Forsyning has high ambitions for the architecture, and throughout the three bidding rounds we have received positive feedback on how we have resolved it, both in terms of the challenging site conditions and the integration of a complex process plant.
