Designing the world’s largest humanitarian warehouse for people
PLH is proud to be the architects and designers behind UNICEF’s expanded warehouse in Nordhavn, Copenhagen – the largest humanitarian warehouse in the world. This facility plays a crucial role in ensuring that life-saving aid reaches people in need swiftly and efficiently. Our design not only optimizes logistics but also aims to enhance the working environment for UNICEF’s employees, supporting their vital mission with a space that fosters collaboration, transparency, and efficiency.

A purpose-driven expansion
UNICEF’s operations have grown significantly, necessitating an expansion of their global supply hub. Strategically located near Copenhagen’s new container terminal and airport, the facility ensures rapid distribution of aid worldwide. PLH has been trusted with the architecture and design of the project that includes a new administrative building for 600 employees, a low-storage facility, and two fully automated high-bay warehouses accommodating over 75,000 pallets. Additionally, it features a visitor center and conference facilities, making UNICEF’s operations more visible and accessible to partners and the public.
Merging functionality with representation
The expanded facility is more than just a warehouse – it is a landmark that represents UNICEF’s global mission. Visitors, donors, and school groups will have the opportunity to witness firsthand how humanitarian aid is packed, stored, and distributed through a visitor’s journey. Elevated walkways within the warehouse allow for safe observation of operations, reinforcing the message of transparency and engagement.
A workplace designed for collaboration and transparency
The administrative building is designed as an atrium house, emphasizing openness, transparency, and collaboration. The architectural concept encourages cross-disciplinary teamwork, with open spaces and informal meeting areas that reflect UNICEF’s values. Thoughtfully selected materials, such as Nordic pine, wooden construction, and ceramic tiles, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
“We are honored to have designed UNICEF’s humanitarian hub, striking the perfect balance between efficiency, representation, and a transparent, flexible workplace. Our goal is to create a world-class logistics center and administration that not only enables UNICEF’s life-saving work but also serves as an inspiring and functional environment for its dedicated employees.”

A proud collaboration
This project is the result of close cooperation with UNICEF and By & Havn transforming a complex brief into an architectural design, balancing operational efficiency with an inspiring and inclusive workspace. Now, we look forward to handing over the detailed design concept, drawings and quality descriptions to the team assigned to the construction of the building until 2028.
The design phase has been led by PLH with NIRAS, SLETH and Frost Larsen as subcontractors.
