Connecting modern workspaces and research facilities
DLF
PLH, in collaboration with Nordland Arkitekter, has designed the global seed company DLF’s new visionary and future-proof headquarters, including associated laboratory facilities. The building brings together research, innovation, and workplace functions into a strong architectural identity, where nature plays a central role throughout the design.

Introduction

In their words
Søren Halbye, Group CEO, DLFWe are very pleased with our new headquarters, which in practice lives up to the expectations we had from the outset. The architects at PLH Arkitekter and Nordland Arkitekter have succeeded in translating our values into physical surroundings where functionality, collaboration, and a focus on sustainability go hand in hand. The result is a workplace that supports the way we work today – and the way we aim to develop in the future.

Summary
The headquarters reflects DLF
The task was to design a headquarters that reflects DLF’s values while creating an optimal environment for the employees. In addition to containing advanced laboratories, growth facilities, and state-of-the-art workspaces, the entire building structure was to be defined by carefully considered natural materials and energy-efficient solutions.
A design rooted in nature
The design process was based on DLF’s visions of future responsibility, employee-centered innovation, and a strong connection to the landscape and nature. The location on Kildedal Hill has made it possible to integrate the building into the natural contours of the terrain. As a result, the landscape becomes an active part of the architecture and is present throughout the building.
Built on DLF’s core values
The design of the headquarters consists of staggered levels that follow the landscape, giving the building a distinctive character. A large glass-covered atrium draws light deep into the building and becomes a dynamic focal point. The open atrium creates a clear and transparent structure. The canteen is positioned with views of the surrounding landscape, and by utilizing the slope of the terrain, it features floor-to-ceiling glass panels. A movable glass wall separates the atrium and the canteen, supporting flexible use of the spaces for different events. The ever-present landscape and surrounding outdoor areas are brought into the interior, where wooden surfaces and window frames create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
In addition to bright, flexible workspaces, the building includes a laboratory section that houses DLF’s laboratories for research, education, and product development. Despite the building’s large volume, ensuring close synergy between the office workspaces and the laboratory section has been a key priority, and they are therefore located in close proximity.
The modern workspaces, advanced laboratories, and social areas such as fitness facilities and lounges are all centered on offering employees an attractive and forward-thinking workplace, where functionality goes hand in hand with a close connection to nature.

Lars Toksvig, Partner, PLHDLF’s high ambitions for employee well-being align perfectly with our expertise. The new headquarters is a bright and welcoming place that reflects DLF’s DNA and seamlessly connects modern workplaces, research facilities, and the surrounding natural landscape. The building’s balanced architecture embodies DLF as a knowledge- and research-based company specializing in the development of grass and clover seeds.

The winning design
The competition juryThe integration of the terrain into a built landscape influences both the internal atmosphere and the outdoor areas in a way that is simultaneously simple and compelling. The choice of materials, spatial qualities, and daylight is convincing both inside and out. Overall, this project meets DLF’s aspirations exceptionally well.
