Summary
An upgraded cultural hub
Amager Kulturpunkt is one of the key gathering places for cultural and community activities and comprises Huset, Amager Bio, and BETA. Huset includes rehearsal rooms, ceramics workshops, painting studios, and event spaces. Amager Bio, originally a cinema built in 1941, was transformed into a concert venue in 1997 and has since established itself as one of Copenhagen’s leading live music venues. BETA, which opened in 2010 as Amager Bio’s “little brother,” is an intimate club venue. To meet contemporary needs, Amager Kulturpunkt required a comprehensive upgrade.
Masonry and windows with special detailing
As part of the renovation, the façades were restored with respect for the buildings’ original architecture. The masonry was repaired using specially fired mortar joints, a traditional craftsmanship technique. This ensures a cohesive appearance, makes the new repairs exceptionally durable, and allows them to blend almost invisibly into the existing brickwork. In addition, custom-made windows were produced to match the appearance of the originals.
Preserving history, renewing the buildings
The project included façade restoration, improvements to the building envelope, and upgrades to technical installations. One of the greatest challenges was managing significant quantities of asbestos while keeping Amager Kulturpunkt open and fully operational throughout the construction period. This placed high demands on planning, coordination, and safety throughout the project. The renovation has enhanced the buildings’ functionality, energy efficiency, and indoor climate while preserving their architectural and cultural heritage values. The result is a modern, future-ready cultural center that continues to support a vibrant cultural life on Amager and serve the area’s many users for years to come. In addition, PLH designed a new roof for the nearby Børnekulturhus Ama’r, helping to strengthen the area’s overall cultural environment.
