The opening of Klintholm Gods Lake Apartments

Friday the 12th of April, the new holiday destination Klintholm Gods Lake Apartments located on Høje Møn, opened up to the public with an event. In collaboration with the client, PLH Arkitekter has designed eight hotel apartments placed in beautiful surroundings with a view over the lake Hunosø. “It is a great project. The building appears modern and blends well into the surroundings,” stated the landowner Carl Gustav Scavenius in 2018. At the event, a tasting of locally produced foods was offered as well as a tour of the new restaurant, farm shop, and hotel apartments.

The engineering and construction company ‘Vestergaard Nielsen’ has been the contractor on the project.

“Architecturally it has been interesting to design a building that brings people closer to nature. At PLH, we hope the new premises can attract more quality-tourists, who want to explore the nature, culture and foods of Møn,” says Søren Mølbak, Partner at PLH Arkitekter and leading architect on the project.

Nature as the main attraction

The new building is designed as a long winged house constructed in natural materials such as larch tree facades and a green sedum roof supporting the biodiversity of the building. The design of the new hotel apartments refers to the typology of barn houses with a rustic character, a saddle roof and large ports.

The interior mixes soft and rustic design creating an informal and honest expression. In front of the new building, there is a large sun terrace where guests and visitors can enjoy the view over the lake Hunosø. By using large panorama windows with seats built into the frames, the view is drawn into the apartments. This feature supports the vision of bringing visitors closer to nature.

Since 2017, the islands of Møn and Nyord has been Dark Sky Certificated. This means that on cloudless nights, visitors can explore almost 14,000 stars directly from their rooms at Klintholm Gods Lake Apartments.

Realdania development project called “The Manors of The Future”

Klintholm Gods Lake Apartments is a part of Realdania’s development project called “The Manor of The Future”. The purpose of the project is to reinvent Danish manors into places where culture, local communities and new businesses thrive in order to increase tourism and support the local environment.

Klintholm Gods, formerly known as Hunosøgaard, was originally designed as a pension for artists and people from Copenhagen in the late 1800s. In the past 25 years, the manor has been reconstructed, new buildings have been added and the place has been rented out and used as a hostel.

“We chose to work with PLH Arkitekter because they on several occasions have shown us that they understand the interactions between buildings and nature and what it takes to create the feeling of being at a special place that you would like to explore. We think PLH has created a beautiful project with a building that looks modern but still blends well into the surroundings.”

PLH’s fourth project at Møns Klint

In 2003, PLH won the competition to design a new visitor centre called GeoCenter Møn. Since then, PLH has developed four projects on Møn: a masterplan for a nature camp called “Møns Klint Camping”, which has won multiple international prizes among others for a ‘Dark Sky’ effort. PLH is also the architect behind the 267 meters “boardwalk” going through the forest from GeoCenter Møn to Freuchens Pynt. The new boardwalk gives people with limited mobility and wheelchair users the possibility of enjoying the beautiful views and the surrounding nature.
